Course descriptions

The faculty of pathology train veterinary pathologists to work in animal disease surveillance, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. They are trained to investigate disease (in humans and animals), conduct research and develop medicines. Our fellowes are trained to play a key role in the development of safe and effective medicines, agrochemicals and chemicals, and contribute to animal conservation and protection.

The faculty has 4 specialisations:

  1. Microbiology
  2. Parasitology
  3. Clinical Pathology
  4. Diagnostic Pathology

Professional experience

Our strudents will be extensively train to acquire among other things, the following skills:

  • The study of animal disease in a variety of species, often with human implications
  • Pathology provides the scientific foundation for the practice of medicine by studying the etiology and pathogenesis of disease at all levels
  • Crucial in determining cause of animal disease and its risk to human health (at the forefront of the One Health concept)
  • Studies range from live animals to specific proteins involved in disease

Career opportunities

As a veterinary pathologist you might work with a range of animals or specialise in a species, laboratory, hospitals or clinics, stables or wildlife reserves.

As a trained veterinarian pathologists you may work in the public sector (for example, at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs); for pharmaceutical, agrochemical and chemical companies, contract research organisations and diagnostic veterinary laboratories; and as freelance consultant veterinary pathologists.

With the restructuring of the College, our Study Centres now serve the multiple role of hosting the 2-4 week on campus practical component of the training, serving as a Clinic Training Centre as well as of supervision of State Clinic Training Centres. This restructuring has also reformed the “lectures” to virtual interactions, these are primarily via video conferencing and other platforms as well as other relevant online platforms.
